Does the opening of your
manuscript hook a reader? No? Don't know? Fortunately,
the Chocolate Rose contest is now open! Five published authors will
judge your opening and offer feedback to make that first page sizzle!

Only MORWA members unpublished/not-contracted in romantic fiction are
Enter the first 25 lines of a manuscript that either has never been entered
in the Chocolate Rose or, if previously submitted, has been substantially
changed. No previous winning entries may be submitted again. Only two
entries per person are allowed.
Entries may include a maximum of the first 25 lines of text, double-spaced
in a 12-pt font. It is recommended entrants NOT end their entries in the
middle of a sentence. Entries should include a header with the entries
general category (i.e. historical, contemporary, etc.) and the working title
("Unttitled" is acceptable). Author's name may not be anywhere on the entry.
All entries must be submitted through the MORWA website and be uploaded as
.rtf, .doc, or .docx file type. One entry per form. You will be asked to
upload your file when you fill out the form, so have it ready.
Cost is $5 per entry. Payment may be made in cash or check at a meeting, by
PayPal through the link during entry submission, or by check mailed to:

All entries are time stamped when received and will the be determination of
entry time. You should receive an auto-confirmation of your entry; if you do
All entries will be pooled for the purpose of the awards. Individual
category awards are not given. The genre category is placed in the
manuscript header for the judges' edification only. Entries will be
evaluated by five judges from our pool of published MORWA authors and the
2016 first place winner, if available. By entering the contest, entrants
agree to have their submission read by all judges.
First, second, and third place winners will be announced at the April
meeting. Prizes will include chocolate and/or certificates, at the contest
coordinator's determination. By entering the contest, entrants agree to a
winning entry being read aloud at the April meeting and the entry being
published in the May edition of the Rumpled Sheets.
All efforts will be made to return entries at the April meeting when winners
are announced, or within five days thereafter.
